| System Title |
Asset Allocation System - SMART |
| Client |
Saratoga Capital Management |
| Business Goal |
Allow a financial services advisor to determine
the appropriate asset allocation for a customer and to generate the appropriate documents
to confirm the analysis and open the account. |
| Complications |
The users were not employees of Saratoga, but
of their distributors. The application needed to be designed for users with a limited
skill level. Also, the documents needed to be tamper-resistant, there were compliance
concerns about the possibility that the users could alter the wording of the documents.
Since the destination environment was not known or controlled, no other software (like a
word processor) could be required. |
| Our Approach |
We developed techniques for customizing
documents. |
| Technologies Used |
The program was written in Visual Basic 3.0.
The model documents were prepared as rich text files (RTF) and then distributed in one
binary file with tamper protection. Markers were used where text substitutions were
needed. |

| Applicability of
Techniques |
The technique of generating custom proposals
and contracts from user can be used in a wide variety of applications and industries. |
| System Description |
The program is started by the financial
services advisor. Basic information on the prospect is entered. Then a series of questions
is shown and the answers entered. The program checks for consistency, then determines the
appropriate asset mix. The user can then view or print one of several documents. A
database of prospects is kept. (Click the images
